Hurricane Ike made its appearance here in Houston a few weeks ago and things are just now getting back to normal. Graham and Harrison's daycare just got power back on Friday, so last week they went to work and school with us (fun for them, not for us). The traffic lights around our house are still blinking red, and then some aren't even working at all. Trees are down everywhere and billboards are blown to pieces. It's like something out of the movies when you drive around the city. The news said the other night that Ike left 93% of Centerpoint customers without power....the largest power outage in the city's history. We were lucky to only lose power for 24 hours (according to our neighbors)....we actually evacuated to Dallas for a few days. I kept thinking "No lights + no air conditioning + 2 kids = MISERY", so we left the day before the storm. My sister asked me what valuables I chose to bring with me and I told her 1) my family (of course) 2) my camera and 3) my frozen milk that I had pumped (liquid gold as I like to call it)...for those of you who have breastfed, you can probably see why that was on my "valuables" list.
Here are some pictures of our backyard...it took us (mostly Mick) 3 days to clear our yard. We are so fortunate that our house did not have any damage and that we got power back very quickly...some of our friends still don't have power today. Please pray for those families that lost their homes and/or loved ones. I can't even image what they are going through right now.
